School rant

1. If you're in a huge lecture hall class that's stuffed with students, don't sit at the very end of a row of 20 empty seats and sprawl your shit all over the place. I'm just going to have to stick my ass in your face as I squeeze by and stomp all over your stuff with my awesome snow-covered boots.

2. When you're in said lecture and you're holding a long unrelated whisper conversation and someone gives you the evil eye, take it as a sign that you should probably shut your trap. It's pretty distracting, especially if you're trying to learn biochemistry. Why come to lecture if you're just going to talk the whole time anyway? I don't get it. I hate you.

3. If you teach a class, you need to get your shit together and wrap up your lecture at the scheduled ending time. When you go five minutes over EVERY SINGLE CLASS and I have five minutes to walk from one side of campus to the other, it makes it impossible for me to get to my next class on time. And then I have to climb over a bunch of nerdy bozos and listen to some pair of idiots whispering about whatever unimportant thing they think they need to talk about the whole class hour.

4. Freezing rain is a very bad thing.

Boredom is like a disease worse than cancer

I feel really shitty. It's Nick's second day of work, and already he was late by half an hour, and it was my fault. I fucked up with the alarm situation.

I also feel shitty because I don't have a job. It's amazing how quickly Nick found his. We came home, he went to apply at a country club the next day, the guy called back the next to tell him he got the job, and then the next day (yesterday) he started working. Crazy. His first try, and at the perfect place for him. Then there's me, with not an art supply store (my hypothetically equivalent perfect job) closer than a 4 hour drive (if you don't count Hobby Lobby, which I don't), so I have to apply for stupid jobs at grocery stores and pet stores and shit like that, which I probably won't even get. So here I sit, nobody else in town, no job, while Nick is working all day almost everyday.

What. A. Bummer.

Anyways, he's working in the pro shop so basically he gets to sit around all day and sell equipment to people, and clean the ocassional golf cart. And he even gets tips for THAT. I want a cushy job too! But regardless, I'm glad he got the job he wanted. Hopefully I didn't cause him to lose it.

Now just to figure out what the hell I'm going to do with myself.

To be fair, I have come up with a list of activities that are either interesting or productive. For instance, I bought three books yesterday: The Wild Trees by Richard Preston (a nonfiction about botanists who use ropes and harnesses to study and live in the redwood trees up to 350 feet in the air), another book by the same author called The Demon in the Freezer (also nonfiction about the alleged preparations of various countries to use the once feared small pox virus as a biological weapon), and the last one, The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature by Matt Ridley. So those will keep me occupied. I also got an Indian cookbook which I am excited about, as well as organic chai tea, which I have just finished drinking a cup of.

Other activities include cleaning, taking the glass/plastic/cardboard mountain on our porch to the recycling plant, figuring out how to thread my sewing machine and then finishing the skirt I started almost a year ago and making some curtains for the bedroom (which by now is a pretty pointless thing to do since we are moving in 3 months), working out at the rec center, perhaps painting but probably not, and of course, looking for a job!

Even so, I still feel like a housewife from the 50's, occupying myself with menial and pointless tasks and anticipating the moment hubby gets home from his day of work so I can fetch him a mug of beer. Only instead of beer it's going to be Samoa girl scout cookie icecream (haven't tried it yet, but I have tried the Tagalong flavor and highly recommend it) to apologize for my earlier alarm fuckup.

New Years Eve

Plans for NYE: pretty much identical to last year. One bedroom/one living room hotel room booked at the Congress, and Umphrey's is playing a show again. Tickets are ~$70 after all charges and tax, will probably sell out a week before. If you don't have plans, you should come, whether you go to the show or just hang around at the hotel. It would be really cool though if you could bring like $15 to contribute to the hotel costs, as we are poor peasants. Bring some booze and whatever else and dance your fancy pants off. Yay!

-Kat

PS- Also, we're thinking of maybe having dinner somewhere? Yay, nay? Suggestions?

Right now I am drinking coffee AND red wine (separate, not mixed together) and I am researching several aspects of the argument against the right of the Makah, a Native American tribe, to resume whaling after almost 80 years of not whaling, for the sole purposes of reviving ancient tradition. These aspects are those which were supposed to be researched, typed up in note form and given to me on paper complete with citing of sources by my hard working groupmates.
But peer review sheets are a wonderful thing. Oh yes, you'll get your just desserts, and a verbal written bashing too you dumb bastards!!!

I'm getting really excited about moving. It's just going to be me and Nick now since Ashley found a bunch of girls to live with, but it'll probably be better that way. No awkwardness or comfort issues involved, and I can still go visit her a lot. We're starting to get to the gritty part where we've stopped imagining what kind of place we want to look for and have actually started to look at vacancies. I've been calling property management companies today getting info. I think me and Nick are planning on going down on Monday night so we can look at places on Tuesday during the day, since there's no classes at COD that day. So hopefully by that time next week we will have acquired an apartment to live in next August. Speaking of a place to live, we'll need a place to live Monday night--soooo I'll probably be asking one of you dormies to put us up. We'd be very grateful.

Weeeee!!!

So I did it, I talked to my boss. And I was hesitant to at first because when I walked in everybody was scared and cowering because he was in a really bad mood and was yelling at people. But he calmed down for me, we had a nice little talk, and after next week my hours will be bumped back up to 25! Fucking sweet! I'm not gonna be poor for Christmas!!!

Which, by the way, I'm already working on presents for.
This is one angry lady.

I set up a meeting with my boss for tomorrow to discuss what's going on with my hours, which consist of about 4 a week. Call me crazy but I think that's kind of hard to subsist on. I'd rather not further deplete my savings which I had hoped to use for when I go away to school, not for bills, food and gas. I'm also worried about my keyholder position which I have temporarily given up to make scheduling easier for the boss...and due to bits of overheard conversation going on in the office today after the meeting and bad vibes I have a feeling I'm going to be dicked over and not get my position back next semester as was promised me.

So depending on what kind of answers he gives me, I may be going on a job search very soon. He can be kind of intimidating in confrontation, and I have to remember to be very assertive or else I'm just gonna get pushed over.

Schools.

I've been accepted to both SIU and ISU, with SIU accepting me into their biological sciences major.

I also regret to inform you that I am seriously considering dropping my Calculus 2 class, and probably will tomorrow. Though I love it, it doesn't come to me as naturally as I would like, and with 5 classes I haven't been able to devote enough time towards it. I figure I'll focus on doing well in my biology classes, which would make more sense. I figure I'm making B's and C's in subjects I could easily get A's in if I simply had more time to study, so it would be worth it to drop some baggage. What do you think? Give me input before 6 pm tomorrow if you have useful advice.

Otherwise, things are going well. Things which I have a feeling I'm going to miss a lot when I move away from here.

Halloween is fast approaching. I was going to be lazy and recycle my Frankenfurter costume, but I think I would disappoint myself and that I may be a little more modest now than I was at the time I wore it. So I'm thinkin about being Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and how I could make it cheaply but also make it look good. All of the images of people in Sally costumes that I've Googled have looked awful. Especially the ones who got the store bought ones made out of foam and felt. Ew.

Cootchie snorchers

I went to see the Vagina Monologues with Rebekah and a bunch of middle aged women tonight. It was pretty good. What I liked most were the more comedic monologues, as opposed to the sad (rape, etc.) or poetic appreciative types (vagina worshipping). And the part where one of the actresses made a white haired man in the audience say "cunt!". There was a row of little old ladies in front of us wearing purple tops and big red hats with big purple feathers. Probably the Vagina Monologue equivalents to the folks who go to RHPS midnight showings in costume, I'd imagine. Good time overall.

Afterwards a photographer from the Tribune came up to us and asked if he could take pictures of us talking about the show. Poor guy had to be sent out on estrogen night...well anyways we might be in either this Friday's or next Friday's paper.

Kat: Skunk Saver.

KatSAIC: I just pulled a slurpee cup off a skunk's head!

Crpingdeth999: WHAT?

KatSAIC: I was drivin hom from this little get together, and I see this animal in the street right

Crpingdeth999: yeah

KatSAIC: And it's a skunk, and it's got one of those slurpee cups with the bubble top thing stuck on its head and it's just wandering aimlessly in the street swinging its head around

KatSAIC: So I stop my car and I like ok...what do I do...this could potentially be a very stinky situation

Crpingdeth999: yes

KatSAIC: And a car full of Mexican guys comes by and they kinda pause, and then laugh at it and drive away

KatSAIC: So I get out of my car and I'm kinda like...uhhh...come ere little skunky! Come on!

Crpingdeth999: lol

KatSAIC: And it wanders towards me and I'm like ok I must be crazy, but this skunk will not perish into the night as a result of some jackass and his slurpee cup!

Crpingdeth999: good lord

KatSAIC: So I pull the cup off its head, and it kinda freezes and lifts its tail, so I drop the cup and run away very fast

KatSAIC: And now I feel bad about leaving the cup

Crpingdeth999: oh god, u hippie

KatSAIC: Yeah I know it's terrible

KatSAIC: I saved a skunk!

Crpingdeth999: well thats fine, but feeling bad about the cup is a whole different story
